I once had the same fear but when I look at my education I realize that coding is not what forced me to learn lower level concepts. I learned how a computer works through deliberate study of lower level concepts and those learnings translated to a better understanding of code. The kids will be alright as long as study remains a common practice.
i think it is similar to auto complete, depending on how aware you are of what it does for u, it will or wont have an impact on your learning. personally, maybe because i use cheap options and program niche stuff, this AI stuff is just for chatting. 0 useful outputs and always talking in circles. it might give some good clue, or waste hours of time in some rabbithole u didnt need to go in.
that being said, while most people turn their heads if i talk about my project, the ai is happy and encourage me :p so that actually motivate me to push on and learn. in a way, it help me to get smarter like that. like a buddy whos enthousiastic about your project and progess. happy to hear about how u fiddled with some assembly and got it to work after weeks long epic battle :').
i think its all in being aware of what it is, and what it can and cannot do for u.
Imagine a musician with an AI guitar. “It does scales! It can automatically play a piece in a different key!” How is that going to work out?
The problem tho is if you take the time to learn and to understand, Kevin down the hall is going to be more “productive” in the short term, and management, who don’t gaf about your personal development, is going to be unhappy with you.
